I grew up in Darwin so I was very pleased to stage the inaugural Darwin 9s in August 2021. Footy is normally played in Darwin between October and March, when the weather is hot and humid.
So it was a no-brainer to create to stage the Darwin 9s during the dry season, when the weather is perfect! If you haven’t spent time in Darwin during the Dry, do yourself a favour and make it happen.
In 2021 the competing teams were NTFL clubs – PINTS, Darwin, Wanderers, Tracy Village (Women’s Division) and Nightcliff, St Marys, Darwin, Wanderers (Men’s Division).
In 2022 the focus was changed to multicultural and indigenous teams. The competing teams were Timor-Leste Crocs, Ireland, Darwin Lions, US Marines (Division 2) and Team Larrakia, Greece, New Zealand, Pacific Chiefs (Division 1).
The Darwin 9s is now an annual event and one which I very much look forward to.
